Amor Fati, a Latin expression meaning “love of fate,” encapsulates a philosophy that views every aspect of life—both the hardships and setbacks—as inherently positive or, at the very least, essential.

I first encountered this concept through the film A Good Person, a story about two souls who, battered and bruised, strive to find comfort. Often, our perception of life resembles a dimly reflective mirror, revealing only a partial truth. Many of us hide untold secrets within our hearts. Yet, whatever happens in our lives is already planned by God. Perhaps, accepting the things we cannot change is the wisest choice.

As we approach 2024, we face numerous uncertainties. There are ongoing wars in some countries, the continuing impact of COVID-19 on people, inflation, and rising violent crimes—all contributing to a climate where good news seems scarce.

With Christmas upon us, I’d like to share a heartwarming story from my experiences over the years.

As a foreign student, I often spent holidays with my hometown friends. Among our group was a couple who had recently become parents to a newborn. One memorable story the mother shared with us took place during a Christmas event.

“We got married back home and came here to pursue our dreams. Unexpectedly, I found out I was pregnant. Struggling to support ourselves, the idea of raising a child seemed almost impossible. My husband believed abortion was the only solution, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Determined to explore other options, I went to the university hospital. The hospital staff, understanding our financial burden, offered us a three-year loan to cover the costs. Eventually, we welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world. That Christmas, an anonymous donor generously paid off all our accumulated debt.”

She held her miracle baby in her arms, tears streaming down her face. It was a Christmas I’ll never forget.

One of my friends shared that the most challenging feeling she experiences is the sense of aging. I advised her to shift her focus away from her age and instead embrace each day wholeheartedly. Our lives are a wondrous and blessed journey, especially with the presence of our five granddaughters. While our children are preoccupied with their own lives, our granddaughters bring sweetness to our golden years. We are deeply grateful.

No matter where you are, we miss you, dear friends and family. Our cherished memories remain forever alive.
